Purpose
Anxiety Aid International SCIO ("AAI") is committed to promoting the wellbeing, safety and protection of all individuals who engage with the charity.
This policy applies to all Trustees, volunteers, contractors, facilitators and anyone acting on behalf of the charity.
AAI recognises that children, young people and vulnerable adults have the right to participate in activities free from harm, abuse, neglect, exploitation, discrimination or inappropriate behaviour.
Safeguarding Principles
AAI will:
- Put the welfare of children and vulnerable adults first.
- Create a safe and supportive environment.
- Promote dignity, respect and inclusion.
- Take all concerns seriously.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to safeguarding concerns.
- Comply with Scottish safeguarding legislation and guidance.
- Maintain confidentiality while ensuring safety remains the priority.
Who This Policy Applies To
This policy applies to:
- Trustees.
- Volunteers.
- Session facilitators.
- Guest speakers.
- Contractors.
- Anyone representing AAI.
Definitions
Child
Any person under the age of 18.
Adult at Risk
An individual who may be vulnerable due to disability, illness, age, mental health difficulties, trauma, dependence on others or other circumstances that increase vulnerability.
Expected Standards of Behaviour
Individuals working on behalf of AAI must:
- Treat all participants with dignity and respect.
- Use appropriate language and behaviour.
- Avoid favouritism.
- Maintain professional boundaries.
- Listen without judgement.
- Report concerns immediately.
Individuals must not:
- Engage in abusive, threatening or discriminatory behaviour.
- Exploit participants.
- Form inappropriate relationships.
- Share personal or confidential information without proper authority.
- Ignore safeguarding concerns.
Recognising Safeguarding Concerns
Concerns may include:
- Physical abuse.
- Emotional abuse.
- Sexual abuse.
- Neglect.
- Bullying.
- Coercion.
- Exploitation.
- Online abuse.
- Self-harm concerns.
- Serious mental health concerns where safety may be at risk.
Reporting Concerns
Any safeguarding concern must be reported immediately to:
The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
or
The Chair of Trustees if the concern involves the DSL.
The following information should be recorded:
- Name of individual involved.
- Date and time.
- Nature of concern.
- Any disclosures made.
- Actions taken.
Confidentiality
Information relating to safeguarding concerns shall only be shared with those who need to know in order to protect an individual or fulfil legal obligations.
Confidentiality must never prevent appropriate safeguarding action.
Emergency Situations
Where an individual is believed to be at immediate risk of harm:
- Contact emergency services if required.
- Contact Police Scotland if appropriate.
- Take reasonable action to ensure immediate safety.
- Inform the Chair of Trustees as soon as possible.
PVG and Recruitment
Where activities require PVG Scheme membership or safeguarding checks, AAI shall comply with all relevant Scottish requirements.
The Board shall determine which roles require checks based upon the nature of activities being delivered.
Training
Trustees and volunteers involved in relevant activities should receive safeguarding awareness appropriate to their role.
Review and Monitoring
All safeguarding concerns shall be recorded securely and reviewed by the Board where appropriate.
The Board shall review this policy annually.

All Trustees, volunteers and representatives of AAI are expected to read, understand and comply with this Safeguarding Policy.
